UPDATE: MELAB is no longer used for certification as a foreign healthcare worker. The MELAB is no longer a test to take if you are seeking certification as a foreign health care worker. The MELAB program has officially requested that the MELAB no longer be recognized for the purpose of certifying health care workers. As of November 27, 2002, the University of Michigan English Language Institute no longer reports MELAB scores to ICHP/CGFNS for visa screening purposes. Because of the sudden great increase in demand for the MELAB Test for the purpose of visa screening for health care professionals, we cannot guarantee fair access or adequate test security for such a large population in such a high-stakes testing situation. If you are a student wishing to take the MELAB for admission to college or university, please submit the registration and the fee along with a note stating that you will be taking the test for school admission. If you are a health care worker and want to take an English proficiency test for the purpose of visa screening, you will need to take the Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and Test of Spoken English (TSE) provided by Educational Testing Service (ETS). For information about TOEFL/TSE, please visit their website www.toefl.org. You may be happy to hear that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is in the process of recognizing two additional tests for visa screening for health care professionals. These tests are the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) - websites: www.ielts.org and www.toeic.com respectively.
