The Yukon province through its Nominee Program nominates potential immigrants based on industrial and economic priorities and labour market conditions to permanently migrate.

Similar to all the other Provincial Nominee Schemes, the Yukon provincial nomination offers a quicker route to permanent residency status in Canada.

Yukon Provincial Nomination Categories

The Yukon Nominee Program offers two programs, the Skilled Worker / Critical Impact Worker Program and the Business Program.  Applicants migrating to Canada in order to live and work in Yukon can apply under either of the programs.

Both the Skilled worker programme and the Business Programme streams can be divided into two categories.

Business Program

The Yukon Business Nominee Program is designed to attract business expertise and investment capital to the territory and has two programs: the Entrepreneur category and the Self Employed category.

Business programme - Entrepreneur

Under this category, applicants can migrate to Canada as an entrepreneur depending upon their personal assets and business experience.

In order to be eligible for this category, the applicant must:

  • Have at least CDN$250,000 in personal net worth.
  • Must invest a minimum of CDN$150,000 to set up or buy a business.
  • Must have a reasonable knowledge and understanding of Yukon and its economy.

Business programme - Professional Self-Employed

The self-employed category is designed to attract professionals who have the skills in occupation/services in demand in Yukon by establishing business outlets or professional practices.  This category applies only to self employed professionals and applicants do not need to meet the minimum investment requirement of the entrepreneur category.

Applicants need to fulfil the below requirements:

  • The profession of the applicant must be identified as a professional skills shortage in the Yukon province.
  • Applicant needs to provide a certification or accreditation requirement for the particular profession and must be licensed by the relevant professional governing body, if any.
  • Applicant must demonstrate a reasonable knowledge and understanding of Yukon and its economy, environmental, economical and social thoughts.
  • Applicant needs to have adequate funds to put set up and operate a professional service and to support themselves and any dependents for a period of 6 months.
  • Applicant must submit a detailed business plan for the business or practice.
  • Applicant must demonstrate reasonable communication skills appropriate to Yukon

Skilled Worker Program Categories

The Critical Impact Worker and Skilled Worker Programs are employer driven and are aimed to assist employers, sectors or governments in Yukon to identify and nominate potential qualified immigrants to fill positions that cannot be filled by the territorial or national labour market.

Similar to the business programme, migration to Yukon under this stream also offers two sub-divisions, for skilled workers and for critical impact employees.

Skilled Workers
The skilled worker program is for people who have a guaranteed job offer with a employer in Yukon. Candidates under the skilled worker stream need to provide the following:

  • the profession must be listed as an occupational skill shortage
  • must satisfy any certification or accreditation/license requirement for the profession
  • reasonable communication skills in English

Skilled Worker Programme - Critical Impact Employee

This category is designed to permit Yukon business to employ key personnel who will make a significant contribution to industry and local economy in Yukon. It is an employer driven program and the potential individual is sponsored.

The employer needs to demonstrate that an applicant successfully migrating to Yukon would make a major positive involvement and must provide details of the specialist skills and/or experience upon which the application is based.

Applicants will be able to apply for a two-year work permit upon approval by the Yukon Nominee Program and after working for a year in Yukon, they can apply for permanent residency.

Spouse Immigration and Dependent immigration

Like all the Provincial nomination schemes of Canada, the Yukon nominee programme is designed as a route to Canadian permanent settled status. A candidate’s partner or spouse and any dependent children are allowed to immigrate to Canada along with them.

Unmarried children below the age of 22 years can be included as dependents. Unmarried Children above 22 years, who are not able to work due to the mental or physical disability or due to the full time education can also, be included in the application.

Basic Features of the Visa

Canadian migration via the Yukon provincial nomination scheme enables applicants to enter under one of the two categories, as a skilled worker or through the Business Programme.

Candidates who are nominated under a Yukon Nominee Program visa can apply for a Canadian work permit, following which the applicants are also eligible to apply for permanent residency.

Successful candidates will be granted Canadian permanent residence, which can be converted to Canadian citizenship after meeting the minimum residency requirements.

An applicant's spouse and any dependent children are also eligible to immigrate provided they meet the Canadian immigration requirements.

Applicants can also sponsor family members to join them in Canada.
