Australia is a popular student destination with more than 200,000 international students in Australian institutions across all education sectors: higher education, vocational education and training, English Language colleges, and schools.  It has been rated as the third most popular study destination in the English-speaking world, with about 20 percent of students in Australian universities coming from overseas, enrolled in the over 15,000 internationally recognized courses.  

Australia offers high standards of education, globally recognized qualifications from accredited universities, great climate, quality standard of living, open spaces and a multicultural population. It is no wonder that large numbers of students are pursuing their education in Australia.

Any student who intends to pursue their education in Australia for more than 3 months has to obtain student visa.  The basic requirement to be eligible to apply for any student visa of Australia is to be enrolled in a full time course in an Australian institution and have received a Confirmation of Enrollment in addition to Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).  The type of visa would depend on their specific purpose and the types of study being undertaken.

  • Accepted course of study

    The applicant should have been accepted for a full time study in a registered course and received a letter of confirmation of enrollment from the applied university.

  • Financial requirements

     The applicant should have sufficient funds in order to support his/her living and studies in Australia .The applicant should also demonstrate that he/she has sufficient funds to support the living of his/ her dependents even  though they are not accompanying him to Australia .

  • Academic record: The applicant should demonstrate that he/she has a good academic track record i.e. the applicant should prove by providing their school reports and academic records
  • English language requirements: The applicant has to produce substantial evidence in order to satisfy his/her English language requirements. The applicant should provide IELTS/ OET test scores or evidence of having studied in English for at least five years in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom or United States.
  • Valid stay: The applicants have to comply with entry and exit terms of the specified visa.
  • Health and character requirements: The applicant has to meet with health and character requirements as per Australian laws and will have to undergo health checks.
  • Health Insurance: The applicant should have acceptable health insurance through Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the applicant as well as his/her accompanying dependents. 
  • Enrollment: The applicant should remain enrolled  in a registered course of study  
  • Adequate schooling arrangements : The applicant should maintain  adequate schooling arrangements to school aged dependents who intend to pursue their studies for more than 3 months
  • Debts to Australian government: the applicant should not have any debts to Australian government.

This visa will be granted for one month longer than the end date of the applicant’s course, if the duration of the course is 10 months or less. The visa will be grated for 2 months longer than the end date of the course, if the duration of the course is more than 10 months.


Types of Student Visas

  • ELICOS:

    This visa category is designed for overseas nationals who are applying to study an English course. To apply for this visa, students should be enrolled for an English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS)as stand –alone course and not as pre-requisite to any other main course. Students applying for this visa should prove their financial capability and obtain health insurance cover.   Students can work 20 hours a week.

  • Primary / Secondary Student Visa to Australia visa:

    It is a temporary visa designed for overseas students who intend to pursue their primary course or secondary course or an approved secondary school exchange program. Students should meet English language and financial ability criteria and should obtain health insurance cover.
    Students under 18 should obtain parental approval and provide evidence of appropriate arrangements of accommodation and other support.

  • Vocational Education and Training Sector: Temporary Visa (Subclass 572)

    Overseas students who intend to pursue their Certificate I, II, III, IV, Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Advanced Certificates can apply for this visa. Students can work 20 hours a week once their course commences.

  • Higher Education Sector (Subclass 573) Visa

    The Higher Education Student visa is designed for international students who are enrolled in a Bachelor degree, Associate degree, Graduate certificate, Graduate diploma or Masters by coursework

  • Post Graduate Research Student (Subclass 574) Visa

    The Postgraduate Research Student visa is designed for students who want to study a Masters degree by research or a Doctoral degree in Australia.

  • Non Award Sector: Temporary Visa (Subclass 575)
    This visa is for foreign students who are enrolled in a foundation, bridging or other course that does not lead to the award of an Australian degree, diploma or other formal award.
  • AusAID or Defence Sponsored Sector: 
    It is a specialized visa for overseas nationals sponsored by AusAID or Defence to pursue their full time studies in Australia.
  • Student Guardian Visa

     The Guardian Visa is for a parent or other close family member to accompany a student or students while they undertake their Australian education, especially students under 18 who are in high school.

Note: If you were granted a Student visa on or after 26 April 2008, you will already have Permission to Work automatically included with your visa.
If you were granted a Student visa before 26 April 2008 and have not yet applied for Permission to Work, you and your dependent family members may only apply for Permission to Work after you have started your course in Australia.

  1. What are the eligibility criteria to apply for a student visa?

    The basic requirement to be eligible to apply for any student visa of Australia is to be enrolled in a full time course in an Australian institution and have received a Confirmation of Enrollment in addition to Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).   2. How long is the student visa valid for?

  3. What are the scores needed in the IELTS?
    Based on the course of study, an IELTS score of 6 is required. For an ELICOS course, a score of 5.0 is required. OET and TOEFL is the other English test that may be accepted.

    Those who have studied in English for at least five years in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom or United States, do not need to take the IELTS.


  4. What are the legal requirements for overseas students to comply whilst their stay in Australia on a student visa?
    • Maintain satisfactory Attendance reports and academic record
    • Enroll in a registered course of Australia.
    • Obtain a work permit if visa is granted before 26 April 2008
    • Permitted to work for limited period of time (20hrs per week during the session of your course) if the visa is granted after 26 April 2008
    • Start working in Australia only after the study program commences.

  5. Can I take my dependents along with me?

    Yes, you can take your dependents along with you and they also are permitted to study for a period not exceeding then 3 months


  6.  Can I apply for student visa during my stay in Australia?

    Your eligibility to apply for the student visa during your stay in Australia depends on the conditions of your current student visa in Australia.


  7. Can I work during my stay on a study visa in Australia?

      All the other applicants except those sponsored by AusAID are eligible to work in Australia subject to some conditions


    • Work only for 20hrs per week during their session of course and  full time during their holidays
    • work in Australia only after the study program commences
    • apply for the work permit if the visa is issued  before 26 April 2008

  8. Can I pursue my studies externally during my stay in Australia on study visa?

    Yes, you can pursue an external online or distance course provided you are enrolled in at least one course in an internal mode in a study period. Also, you must not enroll in more than 25% of your program in an external mode over the duration of your program


  9. What are the special requirements for the children under aged under 18?

    Approval should be obtained from the University regarding the accommodation and welfare facilities provided to student who is a minor unless they are living with an adult family member. The University will also be monitoring your academic progress.


  10. Can I change my course of study once I have enrolled at a university?

    You can change your course of study with approval of Program director if there is no such ion mentioned on the student visa, but if the condition is mentioned on the visa you are not allowed to change your course of study with out prior approval of department of immigration.


  11. Can I extend my visa?
    You can extend their stay in Australia by applying for a new visa before your current visa expires. To continue your studies, you must apply for a new student visa.
