Overview
The skilled sponsored visa is for individuals who fall short of the pass mark for independent migration and have the qualifications or skills that are needed by the Australian economy. The basic requirement of this visa is to obtain a nomination from a participating State/ Territory and meet the points test by scoring 100 points. Points are awarded on the basis of age, possessing skills and qualifications in an occupation listed on the SOL, work experience and English language skills.
State and Territory governments may nominate visa applicants who have an occupation that is in shortage in their particular State or Territory. There are currently eight states and territories participating in the skilled sponsored programme and each has its own occupation in demand list. South Australia, Tasmania, Western Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), participate in the sponsored migration program.
To be nominated by a State or Territory government, the applicant must satisfy specific criteria, by the particular State or Territory. These may include:
- having an occupation on the skills shortage list in that State or Territory; or
- demonstrating specialized skills in a particular region of that State or Territory
The applicant has to sign an undertaking stating that he and his dependents will continue to live, work and study in the State or Territory for an initial period of 2 years.
The applicant will be granted a permanent multiple entry visa for a period of 5 years. Permanent residents may also be eligible for Australian citizenship.
Basic Features

- Sponsored applicants and their dependents holding STNI visa can live, work and study in Australia for an indefinite period of time.
- Applicants are eligible for citizenship of Australia after staying continuously for a period of 4 years.
- They have access to benefits like health, Medicare and certain social security benefits provided by the Australian government.
- The applicant will be able to sponsor his family for permanent residence.
Eligibility
(Top)Points: The applicant has to meet the points test by scoring 100 point.
- Age: The age of the applicant should be between 18 -45 years.
- English language: The applicant should demonstrate that he/she meets the English language threshold by submitting the test results before the application is lodged.
- Nominated occupation The applicant should nominate an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) that matches with his /her skills and qualifications and recent work experience. The nominated occupation should be both on the SOL and on the sponsored Territory/State SOL.
- Skill Assessment: It is mandatory for an applicant to get positive skill assessment for a nominated occupation before the application is lodged.
- State or Territory Sponsorship: Applicants should be nominated by the State or Territory government.
- Recent work experience: The applicant should be able to demonstrate that he/she has been employed in an occupation listed on the SOL for at least 12 of the 4 years immediately before lodging the visa application.
- Australia Study – The applicant should have studied or met with Australian study requirement in last 6 months before lodging the application.
- Health & character requirements The applicant has to meet with health and character requirements as per Australian laws
- Maintenance funds: The applicants should show sufficient maintenance funds1 to obtain sponsorship from state territory.
- Regional area: The applicant should sign an undertaking that he and his dependents will continue to live work and study in sponsored regional area at least for a period of 2 years.
Dependents
(Top)Spouse, partner and dependent children can be included in the application. The secondary applicants should meet the English language and health & character requirement.
English Language: Secondary applicants 18 years or over included in the application should provide evidence of having at least functional English. Applicants who do not have functional English have to pay second installment fee which entitles them to attend English tuition in Australia.
Health & character: All secondary applicants have to undergo health examination. Applicants over 16 are required to provide police certificates for each country they have lived in for 12 months or more over the last ten (10) years.
